Columbine executed its game plan to near perfection today at Invesco Field at Mile High during the Class 5A state football championship and was rewarded handsomely. The Rebels won their fourth state title since 1999, with a stunning 13-10 victory over Mullen.

Running back Jeff Cicchinelli ran in the winning score with 1:46 to play and also threw for a touchdown on Columbine’s opening drive. Chad Korodaj paced the Rebels, who threw the ball just twice, with 105 of the team’s 293 overall rushing yards.

Mullen’s offense, which came in averaging 46 points per game, was held to just 10 points. Colorado State-bound running back Phillip Morelli had 170 yards on 14 carries.

CLASS 4A

Wheat Ridge won its first title since 1996 with a 31-15 whipping of Loveland in the Class 4A state title game today at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Farmers quarterback Dylan Orms was a one-man wrecking crew, totaling 215 yards on the ground, including touchdown runs of 46 and 69 yards. Overall, Orms accounted for 299 of Wheat Ridge’s 368 total yards.

CLASS 3A

Alamosa started the season as the top-ranked team in Class 3A, and the Mean Moose will finish there. Coach Manny Wasinger’s high-flying offense, led by quarterback Clay Garcia, rocked-and-rolled to a 47-14 rout of South Metro League rival Pueblo County today at Bennett Field.

Garcia, who already held the single-season record for touchdown passes with 47, added five more to his total and became just the second Colorado schoolboy to surpass 4,000 yards in a single season with his 419-yard effort against the Hornets.
