New Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada says that “progress is being made” in Democratic circles on behalf of Denver’s bid to stage the 2008 Democratic National Convention. But he said that “it’s a difficult decision” for party chairman Howard Dean, given New York’s advantages as an experienced, well-funded convention town.
Reid, a strong supporter of Denver’s bid, said it “obviously didn’t hurt” that Colorado elected Democrat Bill Ritter as its governor last month. He said, however, that New York has formidable lobbyists of its own: its Democratic governor-elect, Eliot Spitzer; U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, who masterminded the party’s takeover of the Senate this year; and U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, a potential presidential candidate.
