Geriatric elk

How old do elk get in the wild? In the case of a cow shot near Mountain View during Wyoming’s recent big game season, the answer is at least 20 years.

The rather antique tag on the animal indicated it had been captured during a research project more than 19 years earlier. Biologists with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department noted it’s extremely unusual for an animal to live more than 12 or 13 years in the wild.
