Getting your player ready...

Back in the day, a hungry pack mule named Jenny apparently developed a taste for nitroglycerin sticks – yes, dynamite – while hanging around in Empire, reaching into her pack to get her gnosh on and miraculously surviving the incident. Inspired by Jenny’s “heroic gastro efforts,” the restaurant eventually built upon the explosive dining site at the base of Berthoud Pass was named for her, although the modern menu is vastly improved. These days, Jenny’s Vittles and Spirits specializes in man-sized meals ranging from beef and buffalo burgers to surf and turf. House-made soup, hearty steak fries and jalapeños stuffed with your choice of port wine cheese or peanut butter. Jenny’s is closed Tuesday and Wednesday, and open 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. On weekends, the friendly staff serves breakfast from 8-11:30 a.m.

Get there — Located in downtown Empire at 4 West Park Ave. (a.k.a. U.S. 40), on your left as you head toward Winter Park. 303-569-2570.
