DALLAS-

An elementary school pupil got ahold of pepper spray that was attached to a teacher’s key chain Thursday and sprayed it in a crowded hallway, sending 14 children and a teacher to the hospital for treatment.

Ivette Cruz, Dallas Independent School District spokeswoman, said she couldn’t comment on whether the pupil was disciplined.

Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary was evacuated Thursday morning after children complained of difficulty breathing and irritated throats. Initially authorities believed there was a carbon monoxide or natural gas leak.

Before noon, a hazardous material crew determined the school was safe, and pupils returned to class.
