Zebulon Pike commemoration

A Christmas Eve buffalo barbecue with “Zebulon Pike” will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday along the Arkansas River off U.S. 285 near Salida, at the site where Pike’s expedition camped for two days in 1806.

The expedition celebrated Christmas there after going without food for three days. It was in that area that they found and killed six buffalo.

“Pike” and several soldiers will be at the commemoration, along with Colorado mountain men re-enacting early trapper gatherings and giving a demonstration of robe-making from buffalo hides. One of Pike’s descendent’s, also named Zebulon, lives in Salida and will be wearing a a replica of Zebulon’s uniform.

The cost is $8 for adults and $6 for children. For information call 719-539-6744.
