Who: Bruce and Claudette Erek of Littleton.
Where: Kalaupapa Lookout on the island of Molokai. From this spot you can view the Kalaupapa Peninsula, referred to as the “leper colony” when in the 1850s Hansen’s Disease swept through the Hawaiian Island. The worst cases were sent to this isolated yet magnificent peninsula. Father Damien worked tirelessly for the patients until his death in 1889. Although free of Hansen’s Disease today, the community remains restricted and no visitors are allowed.
Best meal: The Lodge at Molokai Ranch, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Our elegant lunch was island-style with colorful fresh native fruits adorning each plate. The menu featured grilled sandwiches, homemade soups and the catch of the day.
Best deal: You can enjoy an afternoon of golf for only $14 at the Ironwood Hills Golf Course, featuring breathtaking ocean views.
Best time to go: Every day is beautiful in Maui. We were there the first part of November and had rain one day during our 10-day visit.
Travel tip: Take the ferry from Lahaina and spend the day on Molokai. Reserve a rental car when you make your ferry reservation. You can drive to all the points of interest. Most impressive: the North Shore Pali, the tallest sea cliffs in the world at 3,900 feet.
