A standoff with sheriff’s deputies in Morrison ended Tuesday afternoon with an exchange of gunfire and the suspect being shot several times.

The suspect, a man described to be in his 50s, was airlifted to a Denver-area hospital and his condition was not available, said Jefferson County sheriff’s spokesman Jim Shires.

No deputies were injured in the exchange of gunfire.

Shires said it had not been determined whether the man had been shot by sheriff’s officers or the suspect had shot himself.

“There was an introduction of tear gas and smoke into the home, and he began firing at our deputies and officers on the SWAT team,” Shires said. “There was an exchange of gunfire, and the only injuries sustained were to the man in the home.”

The standoff began about noon, when West Metro Fire paramedics responded to a 911 call for medical assistance in the 6000 block of Willow Springs Drive.

Paramedics arrived to find the suspect at the door with a gun in hand, Shires said. The paramedics called for assistance from sheriff’s deputies.

Responding deputies encountered the man with the gun and took cover, Shires said.

The suspect, who has not been identified, shot at members of the Jefferson County SWAT team when they tried to approach the house with an armored vehicle, Shires said.

While the team was deploying tear gas and smoke grenades into the home, the suspect continued shooting at the deputies as several members of the SWAT team returned fire, he said.

When deputies got close enough to the house, they could see someone lying inside.
