Getting your player ready...

The San Francisco 49ers remember Thomas Herrion. And coach Mike Nolan felt it was necessary for the team to face the memories of Herrion a day early.

After the team arrived in Denver on Saturday for today’s game against the Broncos at Invesco Field at Mile High, Nolan brought the team to the stadium to remember Herrion.

The offensive lineman died shortly after suffering a heart attack in August 2005, in the locker room at the Invesco Field after a preseason game between the Broncos and 49ers. Teammates witnessed the incident, which occurred as the team was gathering for a meeting.

This is San Francisco’s first trip to Denver since Herrion’s death.

The 49ers will have a team prayer in the locker room to try to deal with their emotions before Sunday’s game. For Herrion’s family and friends, it’s another indication of how well the 49ers have handled the situation. The team and the NFL Player’s Association earlier this year helped Herrion’s mother purchase a home in Texas.

“It makes me feel good that the 49ers continue to remember and honor Thomas,” his agent Fred Lyles said. “I’m sure a lot of guys will be reflecting in that locker room.”

Wilson still questionable

Al Wilson believes he will be able to play against the 49ers, even though he didn’t practice for most of the week because of a sore back. Wilson worked some Friday after taking Wednesday and Thursday off.

“It’s a little wear and tear,” Wilson said. “Hopefully, I’ll feel better Sunday.”

If Wilson doesn’t play, backup Nate Webster will start at middle linebacker. Wilson said his back got sore this week and it had nothing to do with the neck injury he suffered Dec. 3 against Seattle, when he had to leave the field on a stretcher. He played the next week at San Diego.

Wilson and coach Mike Shanahan said the decision to play will not be swayed by whether Kansas City beats Jacksonville in a game that will be played before the Broncos’ game against San Francisco. If the Jaguars win, the Broncos will be in the playoffs whether they beat the 49ers or not.

“Kansas City has nothing to do with Al Wilson,” Wilson said.

Being prepared

The stadium crew continued to work around the clock in preparation for today’s game. Like last week against Cincinnati, the team is urging fans to dress warm and arrive early because of the snowy conditions. The team also wants fans to be aware there could be extra snow in the parking lot and around seats.

The Broncos, who employ the clean-up crews, are confident the stadium will be in good shape. Coach Mike Shanahan praised the stadium crew for its efforts before the Bengals game.

“The field should be in great shape and the outside parking lot and pedestrian walkway are all in good shape,” vice president of stadium operations Mac Freeman said.
