State wildlife officials expect only slight repercussions for deer and elk from the two holiday snowstorms. With most of the snow concentrated east of the Continental Divide, the state’s primary big game populations escaped virtually unscathed.

“If you check the ski areas around the state, you’ll find snow depths are relatively low,” said Tom Remington, terrestrial wildlife manager for the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

Remington added that the western Colorado snow situation is nearing a seasonal break point at which survival is likely.

Along the Front Range, which received the heaviest snowfall, animals can find relief a few miles downslope.
