Coloradans may have had to turn snow shoveling into a sport over the holiday break, but legitimate high school events and games are ready to resume today.
Having been dormant from Dec. 24-Jan. 1 per state rules and sidelined from Dec. 20-23 because of the Blizzard of 2006, practice resumed Tuesday for the five sanctioned winter sports: boys and girls basketball, girls swimming, ice hockey, boys and girls skiing, and wrestling.
Winter sports will begin modestly today with a lighter schedule, sparking the month of January that will be highlighted by league competition statewide and some of the top wrestling tournaments. Officials who had to postpone various basketball tournaments leading to Christmas also are working to reschedule them.
The stretch runs of winter play will roll into February, when the latter portion of the month will have playoffs for all five sports. Officially, the winter season will be capped March 10 with eight classification titles in basketball.
As usual there will be overlap with another season – March 8 will be opening day for spring sports.
