A senseless tragedy

Woody, I totally loved your column (Wednesday) about a senseless tragedy that killed Darrent Williams. It’s just a shame that this tragedy had to happen to a high-profile individual such as Williams for the public to take notice of the current violence that has plagued our city lately. Instead of building a youth center and/or retire his number in his honor, we should get stronger bills passed in Congress in his name against violence with severe sentences handed out to these gutless gun-carrying criminals. We need much stiffer penalties for the outlaws that have no concern over life. May God bless the Williams family and friends during this time. Rest in peace, Darrent. You will still be making some memorable and meaningful plays in our society in putting an end to unforeseen violence!

What was Fox thinking?

Why was the Sugar Bowl game telecast “pre-empted” by the Fox television network?

I tuned to KDVR-31 to watch highly touted, always “overrated” Notre Dame against “high achieving” LSU Tigers, only to discover I’d be viewing another episode of the “Coach Charles Weis Show.”

There were game “snippets” between unending “close-ups” of Weis – who, adorned in headset without benefit of sound, appeared constantly “lip synching.”

Why must telecasts subject us to boredom concentrating on coaches instead of players on the field?

A cream-puff trend

Last year Notre Dame announced it would move to an easier schedule to improve on-field football results. This year Baylor did the same in regard to its nonconference scheduling. I wonder if the Boise State results will encourage this trend. Instead of Texas-Ohio State, fans would see Ohio St.-Texas Tech or Texas-Iowa, assuming Texas Tech and Iowa don’t adopt the approach to easier schedules.

BCS is out of its league

Boise State goes undefeated and has every right to play for the national championship. Thank goodness the BCS does not control the NFL. It would have Chicago play San Diego for the Super Bowl, eliminate the playoffs, except to allow some of the others to play in a toilet bowl, and destroy the wonderful three weeks ahead. How long will we continue to accept the BCS nonsense?
