The fifth major storm – in as many weeks – left Colorado with 3 to 6 inches of snow across much of the state today, with more in the mountains and Eastern plains.
As of today, Denver had 33 straight days with at least an inch of snow on the ground, the National Weather Service said
Most major highways are open again after closures Sunday out to Kansas and south to New Mexico, although portions of Colorado 86 remained closed.
State troopers reported several accidents, most involving four-wheel drive vehicles going too
fast for conditions, said Mindy Crane, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Transportation
Department.
“We’ve been getting gusts anywhere from 30 to 40 mph. That’s the main problem we’re battling now,” Crane said Sunday.
Authorities reported numerous accidents this morning, including several rollovers.
Two vehicles flew 30 to 40 feet off a bridge this morning at Interstate 25 and E-470, killing one of the two drivers.
Broomfield police said the vehicles were northbound on I-25 around 7:15 a.m., when they went off the overpass and fell about 40 feet into the drainage area. (See related story.)
On eastbound I-76 at 144th Avenue, a Ford F250 pickup truck towing a cattle trailer lost control and hit a semi-truck head-on. A Saturn Vue also hit the semi-truck. Two people were seriously injured. The cows were not hurt, according to Brighton police.
A 45-year-old man who went snowshoeing in the Waterton Canyon area on Saturday was reported missing. Jefferson County Sheriff’s officers said a body had been found in the area, but they had not yet been able to make a positive identification.
