Dave Liniger, chairman and co-founder of Denver-based Re/Max International Inc., bid $1 million Saturday to win “Warrior One,” a refurbished Hummer that CNN used in Iraq in 2003.
The winning bid was made at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event in Scottsdale, Ariz., with proceeds going to benefit the Fisher House Foundation, an organization that builds “comfort homes” for families of hospitalized military personnel.
CNN personnel used Warrior One when embedded with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines in the Iraq war in 2003. The vehicle came under heavy fire near Baghdad in April of that year.
Warrior One was the subject of an episode of “Overhaulin’,” a highly rated program on TLC last fall. Since then, the Hummer toured military bases and other sites across the country until it arrived in Scottsdale for the auction.
“We are honored to support the Fisher House Foundation, which allows service personnel and their loved ones to gather in comfort as they receive medical care and rehabilitative treatment,” Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide, said in a statement.
