An elderly couple who accidentally drove their car into the icy waters of Clear Creek west of Golden this morning have been taken to St. Anthonys Central Hospital where they are expected to recover from exposure.

Erwin Trussel, 86, and his wife, Melitta Trussel, 90, were headed from Denver to the casinos in Black Hawk and Central City when he lost control of his car. Their 1994 Oldsmobile left the roadway of U.S. Hwy 6 and traveled about 100 feet down the embankment into the river.

Colorado State Troopers waded out to the car and cut their seat belts with a knife to pull the couple out. Both victims were suffering from the cold, troopers said.

Troopers said they were trying to determine the cause of the accident, and said they did not suspect speed or alcohol contributed to it.
