A 72-year-old Adams County woman died early today in a blaze that nearly claimed the lives of her son and daughter-in-law.

Patricia Ewing was pronounced dead at the home she owned at 1780 W. 74th Way. Ewing lived with her son and his wife, who were also trapped in the fire that broke out at the residence about 4 a.m., according to police.

Adams County sheriff’s deputies saw heavy smoke and flames from the home when they arrived, said spokesman Sgt. Louis Dixon. Deputies found the couple trapped in a room in the northeast corner of the home.

They told deputies that Ewing was also trapped in the family-room area and they couldn’t get to her. Deputies were able to get through the front door of the home, but not the back, Dixon said.

Deputies couldn’t find Ewing because of the smoke and they exited. But while members of the South West Adams County Fire Department entered the building, the couple was able to get out of the home through a window.

Once the fire was put out, firefighters found Ewing’s body. Two pets also died in the fire.

Investigators are looking into the cause, Dixon said.
