COLORADO SPRINGS – A woman who died of a gunshot wound to the head either accidentally or intentionally shot herself while driving near the Belmont interchange on Interstate 25, authorities said.

Gwendolyn Bernard, 53, was found inside a Ford pickup truck after it rolled near the interchange about 8 a.m. Sunday. An autopsy showed she died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Pueblo police Detective Don Litton said a small-caliber handgun was found in the truck.

“The gun discharged first, which caused the wreck,” Litton said. “But figuring out how the gun discharged is the problem we’re facing now.”

Police do not believe anyone was in the car with Bernard or that anyone outside the car fired the fatal bullet. Ballistics tests have not been completed.

Litton said there was no indication that Bernard, a successful massage therapist, was suicidal.
