Denver firefighters were responding Wednesday night to the report of flames on the first floor of an apartment building in the 1400 block of East 9th Avenue.
There were reports of residents on an upper-level trapped, but a fire department spokesman could not confirm that information.
As of late Wednesday there were no confirmed reports of injuries, the official said.
The fire was reported just after 10 p.m., at an old Victorian house that had been converted into apartments, officials said.
No cause had been determined and officials were uncertain how far the fire had spread in the building.
