Flurries of snow today dusted Denver streets and deposited several inches in the foothills. More snow could come Thursday but the larger development may be the cold front that is taking hold.
On Thursday, an arctic cold front will drop down from Canada, bringing extremely cold temperatures. Lows Thursday night will be just above 0 degrees. Friday night could be very cold with an expected low of 7 below zero. Highs both days will be in the single digits.
According to the National Weather Service, Friday night should be the coldest temperatures of this winter. The last time the temperatures dropped below zero was Dec. 3, when the mercury dropped to -1 F.
Between 2 and 4 inches of snow could fall in Denver late Thursday.
Total snowfall in the metro area is now just 2 inches shy of the average total snowfall for the season, which extends to June.
The storms are bringing much heavier snow to the high country. The entral mountains are expected to receive up to 8 inches of snow, and the southwestern portion of the state could receive 12 to 18 inches.
