COLD BUSTER|Want to ward off those winter colds, especially if you are a woman older than 50? A new study indicates if you walk fast, your nose may not run. Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle found that a group of older women who did moderate exercise – generally brisk walking for 45 minutes a day five days a week – had half the risk of catching a cold compared with a group that did not exercise. But don’t overdo it. Researchers pointed out previous studies showed intense workouts could deplete the immune system and make a person more at risk for colds.|Newsday
GRUMPY ISN’T GOOD, GUYS|If you’re a man older than 45 and you feel yourself getting angry, here’s some advice: Take a deep breath. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health found that negative emotions lead to a decline in lung function among older men. The angrier the man they studied was, the worse his breathing problems became. Anger is also a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, coronary heart disease and stroke in older adults.
