DENVER – On Monday, Denver will deploy about 12 crews of road graders, front-end loaders and dump trucks to begin clearing an estimated 7,000 city blocks that remain ice-clogged.
The plan announced Friday by Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper could cost as much as $10 million on top of the $7 million that already has been spent clearing streets.
The city had budgeted $4.3 million for snow removal.
Hickenlooper’s new plan includes the use of an ice-melting machine and will employ crews of private contractors.
The undertaking could result in $13 million of the $16 million in the city’s contingency fund being spent on road clearing in just the first few weeks of 2007.
