Two of the Rockies’ former top prospects will now attempt to restart their careers with the Dodgers. Outfielder Choo Freeman joined former Colorado closer Chin-Hui Tsao in Los Angeles, signing a minor-league deal today.
The Rockies selected Freeman as the 36th overall selection in the 1998 amateur draft, but he never gained traction in the majors. After plodding through the farm system, Freeman served as a bench player last season for Colorado, hitting .237 with two home runs and 18 RBIs.
Freeman, 27, was granted free agency last week to make room for outfielder Alexis Gomez on the 40-man roster. Two weeks ago, Tsao, his career plagued by arm injuries, signed a $425,000 minor-league deal with the Dodgers, of which $100,000 is guaranteed.
The Rockies, meanwhile, have interest in bringing back pitcher Marcos Carvajal, but only if he becomes a free agent. The Devil Rays designated the right-hander for assignment on Tuesday and free agency is possible only if he’s not claimed on waivers. The Rockies acquired catcher Yorvit Torrealba in exchange for Carvajal, who compiled a 5.09 ERA in 39 appearances as a Rule V selection in 2005.
