Wheat Ridge-based Quest Product Development Corp. announced this morning that Quest and partner Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp., based in Boulder, won a NASA grant to develop advanced thermal insulation for long manned space exploration missions. The NASA grant is the first of three phases of product development.

Ball Aerospace principal engineer Gary Mills invented the new Integrated Multilayer Insulation technology, according to Quest.

Quest is a high-tech research and development company that manages development of new technologies from universities and companies. Quest director of business development Alan Kopelove believes refrigerators or freezers with the new insulation could use 50 percent less energy and water heaters could use 18 percent less energy.
