All is well that ended well for Alamosa.

The Mean Moose won their second consecutive state wrestling title and seventh overall by crowning three champions Saturday night at the Class 4A tournament at the Pepsi Center.

Sonny Yohn, a senior bound for Minnesota, won this third state title with a pin in his 189-pound title match, shortly after younger brother Cody won his second state title with a decision in the 171 final. Jesse Meis won at 103 pounds as the Mean Moose had 144 1/2 points, ahead of Greeley’s Northridge (125 1/2 points) and Broomfield (114).

“It’s nice to go out on top,” said Sonny Yohn, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation.

It was a nice finish after a bizarre start.

Meis was dominating Montezuma-Cortez freshman Casey Lynn and took a 10-0 lead into the second period. From the neutral position, Meis got a takedown and put Lynn on his back, which should have ended the match via a 15-0 technical fall.

At least that’s what Meis thought. So the junior relaxed and Lynn locked his head and dropped him for an apparent pin with 38 seconds remaining in the second period.

Meis sat stunned as Lynn celebrated, but all that changed when the score was corrected.

“You don’t know until they told me,” Meis said.

Bizarre matters continued at 112 as Victor Sanchez of Pueblo West pulled off an improbable rally to defeat returning champion Dale Shull of Fort Lupton 12-10 in overtime. The lanky, flexible Shull was up 10-2 early in the third before Sanchez pulled off a flurry of moves. Sanchez missed an early takedown but scored the winner as time expired.

“When you go down 10-5 and there’s a minute left, not a lot goes through your head,” Sanchez said.

Northridge capped a season of lofty expectations with a strong finish and a 1-2 record in the finals. Heavyweight Tim Saucedo was the Grizzlies’ lone champion.

Greeley Central crowned two champions, as did Broomfield.
