Lake Powell lunker
If it takes a really big fish to get the season declared open at Lake Powell, then the 32.5-pound striped bass caught recently by Sherm Mcdonnell certainly qualifies as a lid-lifter.
Mcdonnell, who lives on the lake at Bullfrog and fishes often, was trying for small stripers with a chartreuse grub on 6-pound-test in Knowles Canyon when the monster hit and headed for deep water. The fish measured 43.75 inches long.
Angling success at the big reservoir will remain weather-dependent for the next few weeks, but steady warming will signal sporadic periods of agreeable conditions. Water temperature ranges around 50 degrees.
Big game meetings
The Colorado Division of Wildlife will hold public meetings to discuss management of deer and elk in game management units 83, 85, 140 and 851, generally around La Veta Pass. These will be a meeting Feb. 26 at Trinidad State Junior College and Feb. 28 at La Veta Community Center, both from 7-9 p.m.
