Gophers hold off Colorado College 3-2

The University of Minnesota hockey team held off a late charge from Colorado College for a 3-2 victory over the Tigers on Saturday at the World Arena in Colorado Springs. Minnesota got two goals from Mike Carman and remains atop the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with 37 points.

The Gophers (25-5-3, 17-4-3) lead St. Cloud State (30 points) and Denver (27 points). Scott McCulloch and Mike Testwuide scored for Colorado College, as the Tigers rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the third period before Carman’s second goal with 8:10 remaining.

Air Force routed Canisius 5-0 in an Atlantic Hockey Association game at the Cadet Ice Arena. Andrew Ramsey had two goals and two assists to lead the Falcons (14-14-5, 11-10-5). Eric Ehn and Jeff Hajner each added a goal and three assists.

DU opens lacrosse season with win

The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team, ranked No. 14 in a preseason poll, opened its season with a 10-5 comeback victory over No. 17 Penn State in State College, Pa. Trailing 5-3 at halftime, Denver rallied behind goaltender Jeb Hollingsworth, who finished with seven saves. Michael Goltra had two goals and two assists to lead the Pioneers and Joey Murray added a goal and three assists.

The 14th-ranked Denver gymnastics team earned its highest team score since 2004 in defeating Northern Illinois 197.000-193.525 at Hamilton Gymnasium.

Castle Rock runners set pace at Simplot

The Kryptonite Speed Team from Castle Rock came from behind to win a sprint medley relay at the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho, and set the top time in the United States this year. The team of Lakeisha James, Sydney Jackson, Jackie Shea and Leigh Ann Ganzar finished in 4 minutes, 1:21 seconds, edging the second-place team by .31 of a second. Ganzar later took gold in the 800 individual, running a time of 2:15.33.

CSU softball team topples No. 11 California

The Colorado State softball team upset 11th-ranked California 2-0 on the second day of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, the first time the Rams have defeated a ranked team since 2004. Sarah Sullivan, a freshman, hit a two-run single in the sixth inning to drive in the winning runs. CSU (4-6) lost an afternoon game to Central Florida, 1-0.
