DENVER-
Qwest Communications International Inc. said Wednesday a regulatory decision lifting some restrictions on long-distance service will help it become more flexible and improve service.
The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday agreed that Denver-based Qwest faces competition and is no longer a dominant long-distance carrier in the 14 mostly Western states where it primarily provides service, Qwest spokesman Tom McMahon said.
The FCC decision lifts some restrictions on long-distance service that were imposed in the 1996 Telecommunications Act, the company said.
The law required Qwest, as a former Bell operating company, to keep long-distance business separate from other services for a three-year period that ended in 2006, McMahon said.
