Indianapolis – The Broncos’ theme this offseason has been finding impact players to help rebound from the disappointment of not making the playoffs. A big step toward potentially finding those players comes at the annual NFL scouting combine.
Most of the top draft prospects gather here for workouts and interviews. The Broncos also will be looking toward free agency and possible trades to upgrade their roster.
The sign-and-trade period doesn’t begin until March 2, but teams can talk trade at any time. Most NFL teams also are finalizing their free-agent wish lists this week.
As for the draft, the positions Denver likely will address in the early rounds include running back, defensive end and perhaps safety.
The Broncos have the No. 21 pick overall, but like last year are expected to keep their options open. Last spring the Broncos traded up to draft quarterback Jay Cutler, with whom they became enamored at the combine and took at No. 11 overall.
Armed with an extra third-round draft choice this year, the Broncos could package that pick to move up in the first round to acquire an impact player – such as Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson, who fits the Denver running style.
Keep an eye on
A look at some of the players Broncos officials are expected to take a close look at during the combine:
Adam Carriker, Nebraska, DE
Rundown: Husker had a huge Senior Bowl week. Strong performance at combine could help him emerge from great DE group.
Charles Johnson, Georgia, DE
Rundown: Has potential to become outstanding pass rusher.
Marshawn Lynch, California, RB
Rundown: Step below Oklahoma’s Adrian Peterson.
Reggie Nelson, Florida, S
Rundown: Broncos need to get younger at safety, so Nelson and LSU’s LaRon Landry will be closely studied.
Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma, RB
Rundown: Sooners star would fit in great, but Denver would have to trade way up from No. 21.
