For years we thought that Barker Dam served to hold back a bunch of water. But we know better now. It’s there to keep all the funkiness from leaking out of Nederland. To experience the full force of the high-altitude weirdness, get yourself up the hill during Frozen Dead Guy Days.
The festival’s forebear, Bredo Morstol, is still packed in ice in a Tuff Shed up in the hills, but over the years, the party has taken on an afterlife of its own. It all comes to life at 6 p.m. March 9, when an ice sculpture is unveiled at the town roundabout; the Blue Ball starts at 7 p.m. There’s a Cryonics Parade at noon on March 10 (9News stiff Bob Kendrick is the marshal), a charity polar plunge at 1 p.m. and coffin races at 2 p.m. It’s a party to die for.– Dana Coffield
Getting there: Nederland is at the intersection of Colorado highways 119 and 72, about 18 miles west of Boulder. For a schedule of events, visit nederlandchamber.org/FrozenDeadGuyDays.
