NASA announced that it issued a request for proposals today for the upper stage of the Ares I launch vehicle, which will transport the Orion crew exploration vehicle being worked on by Lockheed Martin in Jefferson County.
The proposals are due April 13, and NASA expects to choose a contractor by August.
The contract will include manufacture and assembly through 2016. Final manufacturing and assembly will be done at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in Louisiana.
The contract competition will be managed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.
