A former inmate who claims she was raped by a Douglas County jailer said she “may well be pregnant as a result,” according to a letter seeking $1.2 million in damages from the county.
Former Deputy Jeffrey Outlar is alleged to have raped the woman on Oct. 17. He was fired and arrested in December.
“This incident is said to have happened in October, (so) for her to be saying she might be pregnant, well, you would think she would know by now,” deputy Douglas County attorney Kelly Dunnaway said Monday.
Adam J. Schultz, the Colorado Springs lawyer who wrote the Jan. 31 letter, said Monday that he no longer represents the woman.
Reached by phone, the woman said she had a “difference of opinion” with Schultz. Her new lawyer did not return a call.
The woman said she intended to continue her claim against the county, but declined to say if she is pregnant.
Dunnaway said the county has immunity from such lawsuits in most cases.
The woman was in jail last fall on a charge of unauthorized use of a financial transaction device, as well as two more felony warrants in other counties. The letter from her former lawyer said Outlar “attempted to arrange sexual liaisons” with the woman and other county deputies.
The letter also claims Sheriff David Weaver was negligent in allowing male guards to oversee women.
In a written statement, Weaver said the involvement of others is under investigation.
