The Rapids on Thursday signed Yherland McDonald, a 20-year-old Costa Rican midfielder. Because of his age, McDonald will be considered a youth international on Colorado’s roster and will not occupy one of the four senior international roster spots.
McDonald has played for the Costa Rican National Team on the U-20 and U-17 levels and comes to the Rapids from Fredrikstad Fotballklubb of the first division in Norway.
Prout All-Star captain; Nash player of month
Colorado Mammoth forward Gavin Prout will serve as captain of the West Division team for the National Lacrosse League All-Star Game on March 10 in Portland.
The Mammoth also swept the NLL’s February awards, with goaltender Gee Nash named player of the month and transition player Nenad Gajic earning rookie of the month.
Altitude to broadcast RMAC title games
Altitude will broadcast the men’s and women’s basketball championship games of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on Sunday. The women’s game begins at noon, with the men’s game at 2:30 p.m.
Air Force forward going to Frozen Four
Air Force senior winger Andrew Ramsey will take part in the skills challenge at the Frozen Four in St. Louis on April 6. The competitions will include puck-control relay, fastest skater, hardest shot and rapid-fire shooting.
Ramsey is the first Air Force player ever selected for the event. He is second on the team in scoring this season with 20 goals and 44 points.
Denver East graduate Abby Kurtz-Phelan, a senior forward on the Middlebury women’s hockey team, was named the NESCAC player of the year in a vote of the conference’s coaches.
Regis U. names new soccer coach
Regis University hired Keith Tiemeyer, a former Rangers player from 1988-91, as its new soccer coach. Tiemeyer becomes the fifth head coach in the program’s history, replacing Matt McDowell, who retired in December. From 1995-99, Tiemeyer was an assistant coach at the University of Denver.
