Search-and-rescue teams fanned out Sunday across parts of Douglas County but were unable to locate a 52-year-old Castle Rock woman who has not been seen since Wednesday.

Castle Rock police identified the missing woman as Carolyn Gjendem.

Saturday night, Douglas County sheriff’s officers discovered Gjendem’s abandoned vehicle on Jackson Creek Road near Sedalia.

So far, there has been no indication of criminal activity in Gjendem’s disappearance, said Paul Miller, a spokesman and member of Douglas County Search and Rescue.

Castle Rock police filed a missing-person report Thursday, the day Gjendem was supposed to arrive at the home of family members. Gjendem’s family told police she was last seen Wednesday.

In a statement, Castle Rock police said nothing appeared out of order at Gjendem’s home, but her mobile phone was found left in her room.

Miller said as many as 65 people combed Jackson Creek Road and the foothills south and west of Sedalia late Saturday and through Sunday.

Tracks were found, but because they were windblown and filled with snow, searchers couldn’t see enough detail to determine if they were left by Gjendem, Miller said.

Her family, Miller said, described her as someone who liked to hike. At this point, he said, “We are treating this as a missing hiker” case.

The search will resume this morning, he said.
