Toronto FC, a new Major League Soccer team, acquired former South High School standout Conor Casey from Mainz of the German Bundesliga.

Mainz announced Feb. 7 that it was terminating the contract of the 25-year-old forward, who also played for Borussia Dortmund, Hannover and Karlsruher before joining Mainz in June 2004. “He’s a striker that adds a different flavor,” coach Mo Johnston said.

CHL honors Eagles goalie Emond

For the third time this season, Colorado Eagles goaltender Marco Emond was named the goaltender of the week for the Central Hockey League. Emond helped lead the Eagles to two wins last week, 3-1 over the Rocky Mountain Rage on Saturday and 6-1 over Lubbock on Friday.

Covington added to AFA football staff

Air Force football coach Troy Calhoun added Patrick Covington to the team’s staff as an assistant coach charged with working with the offense.

Covington leaves Coastal Carolina University, where he was an assistant strength and conditioning coach. He is a 2006 graduate of Furman University, where he was a three-year starter for the Paladins.
