State transportation authorities have reopened the eastbound lanes of Interstate-70 but westbound lanes between Copper Mountain and Silverthorne remain closed, officials say.

“The visibility is very bad,” said Paul Peterson, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Transportation. “There have been multiple accidents throughout a 15-mile stretch.”

It is snowing and the roads are icy, Peterson said. The highway was shut down at 1:20 p.m. after crashes on both sides of the highway.

C-DOT road crews were plowing and removing cars and semi-tractor trailers involved in the accidents from the road, said Stacey Stegman, C-DOT spokeswoman.

She said the snow let up but it is currently snowing pretty hard.

It is unclear how long the westbound lanes of I-70 will be closed, Stegman said.
