Economic developer Brian Vogt, who led the campaign to establish the city of Centennial and directed the state office of Economic Development & International Trade, has been appointed the new chief executive of the Denver Botanic Gardens.

When he assumes office April 2, Vogt will bring experience from serving in three state Cabinet positions since 2004, and a reputation for liveliness in often-straitlaced circumstances.

During a 2005 state trade mission trip to Budapest, Hungary, with then-Gov. Bill Owens, Vogt leaped to investigate when Owens wondered aloud about the flammability of the local liqueur being served. Vogt used a candle to light the alcohol, and accidentally set his clothing afire when he tried to drink the flaming serving.

“That became one of the governor’s favorite stories to tell when he introduced me to someone,” Vogt said, a little ruefully. “People have to smile and laugh when they’re doing their work. That’s one of the things I enjoyed at the chamber.”

During his 14 years as president of the South Metro Chamber of Commerce, before assuming his state Cabinet positions, Vogt discovered the chamber members’ musical talents.

The chamber regularly presented musical parodies for visiting dignitaries, including ABC newsman George Stephanopoulos, with Vogt providing the lyrics and tambourine back-up.

The Denver Botanic Gardens’ finances have rallied, but Vogt said he intends “to increase the overall economic health of the gardens” by pursuing grants, corporate partnerships and fundraising.

“From everything I’ve seen, they’re in a healthy situation right now,” he added.

Vogt replaces John Scully, who left the Botanic Gardens in August.
