DENVER-

Lawmakers reintroduced a bill that would require sex offenders to register their online identities Monday, removing a requirement to identify company e-mails that doomed a prior measure.

Lawmakers also agreed to limit the new bill to sex offenses involving minors.

“Technology is being developed at an incredible rate and we have to keep up if we want to protect our children,” said Rep. Spencer Swalm, R-Centennial.

The measure (House Bill 1326) would require sex offenders convicted of an offense against a minor to provide all e-mail addresses and instant-messaging and chat-room identities to local law enforcement.

That would be on top of current rules, which require sex offenders to register their physical address and the name and address of their employer.

Lawmakers cited studies done by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that show about one in five children ages 10-17 who use the Internet frequently have received a sexual solicitation or have been approached over the Internet.

The bill will be heard Tuesday by the House Judiciary Committee.
