Lakewood – Adam Doyle woke up Thursday morning, noticed the colder, gloomy conditions and prepared himself.
“I knew it would be one of those days,” the Wheat Ridge senior said. “So I had to get loose as far as bullpen work goes and playing catch.”
It worked. The right-hander fired a no-hitter as the Class 5A Farmers drubbed 4A Golden 10-0 in five innings at All-Star Park in a Jefferson County nonleague baseball game.
In his first outing of 2007 for the Farmers (2-0), Doyle was in midseason form. He faced 16 batters, one over the minimum, and walked only two Demons.
Golden (1-1) managed just one deep drive to the outfield, off the bat of No. 9 hitter Shams Sayed for an out, as the Farmers were solid behind Doyle. They turned a first-inning double play. Doyle didn’t blink after walking Golden leadoff hitter Jeff Walker. He retired the final 10 Demons in order.
“I felt good,” Doyle said. “I was a little nervous after the first walk, then it seemed to flow pretty well.”
Said Farmers coach Adam Miller: “That’s as good as I’ve seen him pitch for us.”
Wheat Ridge scored 10 runs in the first three innings, including four in the first, despite totaling only four hits.
“You see four hits and think it’s a pretty good game,” Golden coach Brad Madden said.
However, he added, “We didn’t throw it over the plate.”
Golden starter and loser Evan Gosda didn’t make it out of the third inning. He hit four batters, walked five and had three wild pitches. He also surrendered two doubles and a two-run homer by Kenny Swanson. Jeff Nadeau added a two- run single and bases-loaded walk and Matt Wright ripped a two-run double.
“We can build on this,” Doyle said.
