UNC’s Vincent advances in NCAA wrestling
The University of Northern Colorado’s Shawn Vincent advanced past the second round at the NCAA Division I wrestling tournament Thursday after he earned a 10-3 decision victory over Oregon State’s Kyle Bressler in the 184-pound division. Vincent avenged a 4-3 loss to Bressler on Jan. 20 in Greeley.
At 125 pounds, UNC’s Tony Mustari was eliminated by Dave Tomasette of Hofstra 5-1. At 133, Darrion Caldwell of North Carolina State pinned the Bears’ Kenny Hashimoto in 28 seconds. At 149, Minnesota’s C.P. Schlatter downed UNC’s Luke Salazar 9-1. And at 285, Edinboro’s Joe Fendone eliminated UNC’s Reece Hopkin 5-0.
Minnesota led the team competition after Thursday night’s consolation matches with 34 points, with Missouri second at 29.5. Iowa State was third with 27.5.
Montana hires former CU player as coach
Former University of Colorado wide receiver Cedric Cormier has been named wide receivers coach at the University of Montana. Cormier played two years at Colorado, also as a kick returner, and has been an assistant coach for wide receivers and special teams at Baytown (Texas) High School for the past two years.
Torres set for national 8K meet
University of Colorado alumnus Jorge Torres will run in the USA Men’s 8K Championship on Saturday at Central Park in New York City, the place where he won his first national championship in 2005. Other contenders include Olympians Anthony Famiglietti, Dan Browne and Abdi Abdirahman, a 2005 runner-up in the event.
Metro State diver second in Division II meet
Metro State’s Kenny Rhoades placed second with 475.30 points in the 3-meter event at the NCAA Division II diving championships Wednesday in Buffalo, N.Y. Rhoades, a freshman, fell short of Saint Rose’s Brandon Birchak, who finished with 547.10.
