CHEYENNE, Wyo.-
A Nebraska man who survived last year’s snowy pileup on Interstate 80 said he was dissatisfied that no charges will be brought in the fatal crash.
“I’d say I’m disappointed,” said Norris Renken, of Bertrand, Neb.
Renken and his wife, Jean, were among those involved in the March 26, 2006, crash. Jean Renken suffered a broken back, and Norris Renken’s attorney has said he plans to file civil suits against other drivers in the crash.
Six people were killed, including four members of a Colorado family.
Earlier this week, Carbon County Attorney Cindy DeLancey said no criminal charges would be filed.
DeLancey, who took office in January after beating incumbent Carbon County Attorney David Clark in November’s election, said the months that had elapsed since the crash made it harder to bring charges.
“This isn’t something I took lightly,” DeLancey said. “There was a lot of thought, and I really struggled with this.”
Clark said this week that he told the Wyoming Highway Patrol in the fall that he didn’t intend to bring charges, but patrol Capt. Perry Jones said he wasn’t aware that any decision had been made before DeLancey’s this week.
Also this week, the Highway Patrol made available its completed report on the crash investigation to the public.
“There’s field notes, videotapes and just a lot of background scribbles, diagrams and measurements that were all used to come up with the completed crash investigation report,” Jones said.
