The University of Vermont’s Alex Young scored a hat-trick goal with three minutes remaining in the game that proved the game-winner in the Catamounts’ 9-8 men’s lacrosse win over host Denver at Peter Barton Stadium on Saturday.

The teams traded five lead changes and four ties, but Vermont (3-2) goalie Daryl Swartz held Denver (4-4) scoreless in the fourth period, making six of his 10 saves in the final 15 minutes to to preserve the win.

Brandon Barcus, Jon Paulson and Ryan Zordani scored two goals apiece to lead the Pioneers, who finished the game leading in shots (32-27), ground balls (24-22), clears (18-17) and turnovers (29-28).

Denver begins its conference schedule Saturday when it takes on host Quinnipiac at noon MDT in New Haven, Conn.

No. 11 Bucknell (6-1) led 5-0 in the first half and downed visiting Air Force (1-4) 8-3 in Lewisburg, Pa.

Baseball

Fort Worth, Texas – No. 28 TCU scored six unanswered runs to snap a 1-1 tie in the Horned Frogs’ 10-2 win over Air Force in a Mountain West Conference game at Lupton Stadium.

Air Force (5-17, 0-2) managed one run on three hits in six innings against TCU starter Chance Corgan (3-1). TCU (14-6, 2-0) scattered six runs on nine hits in five innings off the Falcons’ Mitch Brown (1-5).

Track and field

Boulder – Air Force’s Dana Pounds won the javelin with a best throw of 172 feet, 10 inches at the Potts Invitational, the outdoor track and field season-opening meet for the competing teams.

Pounds fell short of her Potts Field-record throw of 186-10 last season, but she topped Colorado’s Hannah Warfield-Ruffatto, who threw the third-best mark in school history at 161-5.

Wyoming won eight titles, led by a sweep of the women’s 200 meters. Sharon Larrier won in 24.36 seconds, followed by Amanda Hopper (24.93) and Maricel DaCosta (25.14).

Colorado’s Zach Hazen and Ryan Willis finished one-two in the men’s hammer throw, Hazen at 192-3 and Willis at 180-4. Northern Colorado’s Justine Sandersfeld won the women’s 400 in 57.29, and the Bears took home five event titles. Air Force won eight event titles, and Colorado won six.

Swimming and diving

Minneapolis – Air Force’s Chris Knaute finished 21st in the men’s 1,650-yard freestyle at the NCAA men’s swimming and diving championships at the University of Minnesota.

Knaute’s time of 15 minutes, 20.86 seconds was well behind first-place Larsen Jensen of Southern California (14:26.70).

Knaute on Friday finished 17th in the men’s 400 individual medley.

Auburn won the team title with 566 points. Stanford was second at 397, followed by Arizona (371), Florida (321) and Texas (296).
