David Moe, head basketball coach at Division II Emporia (Kan.) State, interviewed Monday for the University of Denver men’s basketball position.

“I think it went well,” said Moe, who has roots in Colorado. “I appreciate (athletic director) Peg Bradley-Doppes giving me an opportunity to come in. I grew up in Denver, and I think I’d be a good fit at the University of Denver.”

Moe, the 42-year-old son of Nuggets assistant Doug Moe, has been an assistant coach at Kansas, Texas Tech, the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and the University of Colorado. He attended Smoky Hill High School – he played at Division II Catawba in North Carolina – and was a CU assistant for seven seasons (1993-2001).

That led Moe to Emporia State, which finished 21-8 this season after losing in the first round of the Division II national tournament. Moe is 101-70 in six seasons with the Hornets.

“My years at the University of Colorado, then going on to Emporia, have set me up for a job like this,” Moe said. “I’m highly interested.”

Moe said he sold himself to Bradley-Doppes on his Front Range basketball knowledge and ability to recruit instate players. He said most of his Emporia players are from Kansas or neighboring states and all have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Moe’s interview coincided with a recruiting visit to the home of East High School star Donell Wells.

“If there was a job I think I’d be prepared for, it’s the University of Denver,” he said. “I still have ties with high school coaches here, having recruited so many kids from this state. And, of course, I’ve got a lot of ties in the area.”

A request to speak to Bradley-Doppes about her search to replace the fired Terry Carroll was denied.
