Phoenix – Jake Plummer says he has retired, but the team that holds his rights still hopes to see him at training camp.
When asked Monday if he expects to have the Broncos’ former starting quarterback in for camp, Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden said, “Yes, we hope so.”
Still, Gruden acknowledged he hasn’t recently talked to Plummer, although the Buccaneers would like to meet face-to- face with Plummer in an attempt to talk him into playing. Gruden has had some Tampa Bay players place calls for Plummer, but unsuccessfully.
The Buccaneers traded for Plummer on March 3, the day after he told both the Broncos and the Buccaneers he was going to retire. On March 9, Plummer publicly reiterated those plans, vowing never again to wear an NFL uniform.
Plummer has declined to take questions about his retirement because he is subject to owing $7 million in prorated signing bonus money from the last deal he signed with Denver. The Buccaneers inherited the right to recoup the money as part of the trade with the Broncos. Denver will get a fourth-round draft choice in 2008 if Plummer reports and will get a seventh-rounder if he stays retired.
The Bucs are banking on Plummer changing his mind. He wouldn’t have to repay the $7 million if he shows up at camp.
“We think he can help us,” Gruden said. “He’s a good player and a good guy and we’d love to have him. I think he can play.”
