OMAHA, Neb.-
U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson said Wednesday that he hopes President Bush doesn’t follow through on a threat to veto a $122 billion emergency spending bill that sets a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq.
A veto would threaten not only funding for U.S. troops in Iraq, but also about $4 billion for farmers and ranchers who have suffered losses due to weather, said Nelson, the Nebraska congressional delegation’s only Democrat.
It’s unlikely there are enough votes in the Senate to override a veto, he said.
“I would hope the president would think twice about vetoing it,” Nelson said in a telephone conference with reporters.
“This is something the president can work out with Congress, if both sides are willing to give and take,” he said.
