money|Prevent a faulty fridge

Refrigerators rarely break down, but they still need regular maintenance. Follow these tips from RepairClinic.com to ensure

everything stays cool with your refrigerator.

Inspect the gaskets on the refrigerator and freezer doors. These gaskets provide a

necessary seal to keep cool air in and warm air out. If a gasket is loose, tighten it. If a gasket is torn, replacing it is an easy fix.

Use a special cleaning brush once a year on the condenser coils on most self-defrosting refrigerators.

Give it some room. Inadequate clearance around the refrigerator may prevent it from properly cooling. Make sure there’s

at least 1 inch between the condenser coils and walls or other objects.

energy|Soap that grows on trees

Dried soap nuts from the Chinese Soapberry tree are an organic, hypoallergenic and biodegradable alternative to chemical-heavy laundry detergents. Simply slip two or three soap nuts into a cotton pouch, add an

optional drop of essential oil, then run the pouch through the wash. A 10.5- ounce box of Maggie’s Soap Nuts can clean up to 50 loads of wash. The price is $18.99 at maggiespureland.com.

space|Spring cleaning

Before March ends, the home improvement experts at Angie’s List recommend these end-of-winter cleaning tasks:

Check your crawl space for excess moisture. Look especially closely at any sub-flooring beneath kitchens, bathrooms and laundry areas.

Inspect your roof for weather damage.

Lubricate hinges, rollers and tracks on garage door openers with a light household oil.
