Very unstable weather has blown into the state today, bringing heavy snow to the mountains, blustery winds along the Front Range and foothills and a threat of rain and some snow in the metro area. The northeast corner of the state could also see some rain or snow.

Chain laws were in effect this morning on Berthoud and Vail passes, while Loveland Pass was closed due to an accident and poor conditions. All roads are in better shape this afternoon.

The central mountains from Steamboat down through Vail and Aspen could receive up to 10 inches of snow by Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service. The southwestern mountains, particularly the San Juans, could receive up to 8 inches of snow.

The western slope areas around Grand Mesa could see winds blowing up to 50 mph, the weather service said.

Parts of Douglas and Elbert counties could see high winds as well, with gusts up to 50 mph.

A second front should move through the area Thursday night bringing a chance of rain and snow to Denver by Friday morning. It shouldn’t stick for long.
