ASPEN, Colo.-

The airport in this jet-set resort town began a scheduled two-month shutdown on Monday so its lone runway can be replaced.

The $11.9 million project is scheduled to end in June, with reopening planned for June 7.

Aspen/Pitkin County Airport officials said the 7,000-foot runway has not been overhauled since 1983. Weather conditions at the airport’s 7,815-foot elevation can be hard on runway surfaces, they said.

The airport recorded 44,679 takeoffs and landings last year.
