U.S. retail sales of plasma televisions fell on a year-over-year basis for the first time ever in February, NPD Group reported Tuesday. Total sales of the flat-panel TVs for the month declined to $181 million from $216 million a year earlier.

The sales drop resulted from falling prices, the research firm said. The average selling price of a plasma television was $1,688, which was off 35 percent from the same period a year earlier. That decline overrode a 30 percent increase in unit sales, which rose to about 107,000.

The most popular screen size for plasma televisions is 42-inch, NPD analysts Ross Rubin said.

In contrast, retail sales of LCD televisions rose to $459 million in February, up 58 percent from the year before, according to NPD.
