CLASS 5A-3A

Very few secrets at top of Class 3A

Say the following about Class 3A – in addition to several of its top teams meeting in league play, the top teams of the classification frequently travel to play each other to beef up their nonleague slates. Further examples will occur today, when Faith Christian (Seve Carbajal) heads to Roosevelt at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, pick the yard you want to visit: In the 5A Centennial League, Cherry Creek will host Grandview at 2 p.m. (the two met at Grandview on Wednesday, the host team winning 11-1); Chatfield will be at Green Mountain in 5A Jefferson County at 11 a.m.; and Denver Christian will host Holy Family in a 3A Metropolitan doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. In 4A, Skyline will be at Northridge at 4 p.m. in the Northern, and Cañon City goes to Pueblo South at 10 a.m. in the South Central.

BOARD OF CONTROL

Summer football among top topics

The second of two annual meetings for the Colorado High School Activities Association’s board of control, the governing body of athletics, will begin this morning at the Radisson Hotel Southeast in Aurora. Compared to past years, when juicier topics such as the transfer rule and realignment made the gathering kind of interesting, today’s meeting should be more low-key. Big on the list are proposals involving sportsmanship (behavior issues pertaining to events) and football (allowing programs to at least have some contact on campus during the summer). Various minor-sports committee reports also will be heard, but possibilities for major debate are few.

TRACK & FIELD

LITTLETON

Weather or not they’ll happen …

Weather permitting – this is a recording – the Nike Littleton Invitational will be among Saturday’s bigger boys and girls meets to watch, but don’t forget about a series of others that will involve all four classifications. Take your pick of heading to Bear Creek, Boulder, Regis, Glenwood Springs, Limon and Valley for afternoon team and individual finals.

GIRLS SOCCER

CLASS 5A-3A

Big games in all three classes

Each of the state’s three classifications will have front-liners on the pitch today. In the 5A Centennial, Cherry Creek will visit Mullen at 4:15 p.m.; Golden will be at Ralston Valley for control of 4A Jeffco; and Manitou Springs will travel to Colorado Springs Christian in a meeting involving the upper end of the 3A Tri-Peaks. In addition, the 5A Continental, which began the week with its teams combining for an unusually high number of ties (16), had one in its upper group, upstart Rangeview, set to go through the gauntlet in Littleton. The Raiders will be at Arapahoe today at 2 p.m., and home against Heritage on Saturday at 11 a.m.
