DID YOU KNOW?

Holocaust Awareness Week

House Joint Resolution 1027 was introduced to declare April 15-22 as Holocaust Awareness Week in Colorado and to encourage Coloradans to use the week to teach awareness of genocide and remember the past.

An interfaith service and candlelight vigil to commemorate Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Evans Chapel on the University of Denver campus.

The governor’s 26th annual Holocaust Remembrance Program, with a candle-lighting ceremony memorializing those who died in the Holocaust and honoring Colorado’s Holocaust survivors, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Boettcher Concert Hall, 14th and Curtis streets. The keynote speaker will be Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. For more information, call 303-830-7177.

Top dollar for Buescher

How much for the Buescher?

Sen. Steve Johnson, R-Larimer County, joked that his fellow budget-writing lawmaker, Rep. Bernie Buescher, D-Grand Junction, who was delayed for a vote, had been kidnapped by a member of the Capital Development Committee.

The CDC had been trying to get as much as $45.9 million for public-building construction projects but has recently agreed to a deal calling for $30 million in extra funding.

“You can have him back for $30 million ransom,” Johnson said.

Devil of a time in Angels’ colors

Just because it’s a friendly wager doesn’t mean it’s painless.

Rep. Michael Garcia, D-Aurora, wore a bright red sports shirt Wednesday because he lost a bet with Sen. Peter Groff, D-Denver.

Garcia and Groff promised to wear the opposing team’s colors if his team lost in the Class 5A basketball championship game between Aurora Central and Denver East.

The East Angels, who defeated Aurora Central 60-41 last month, visited the Capitol on Wednesday.

“This hurts,” Garcia said.

Can we quote you on that?

“Wanna go all the way, Sen. Wiens? Oh, let me rephrase that.”

– Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald, D-Jefferson County, asking Sen. Tom Wiens, R-Castle Rock, if he wanted to co-sponsor a bill.
